Jan,
I've had Knautia for a couple of years now (grew them from
seed so I had several plants). I don't mind the foliage,
and in my plants they've grown to fairly nice big clumps.
The foliage also stays during the winter for me, which I
think is a bonus. It depends what colours you've bought,
but I've got the colour that Bob describes, a pale pink and
a much deeper pink (and I think a mauve last year, but that
doesn't seem to be flowering this year, perhaps my memory is
wrong). Lovely plant, I'm very pleased with it. It hasn't
reseeded enormously for me, just a few plants. I would say
they're probably a bit taller than 18" and when you have a
whole mass of them flowering together, it has good impact.
Not all my plants survived the winter though.
