It simply requires patience. LOT'S of patience. One
thing you never want to do with this plant is to divide and spread it out,
as you might with other grasses. A few of my friends have done that and
regretted it; especially when I bust out laughing at the horror of the end

I planted my hakonecloa about five years ago near a young catalpa tree.
But first I divided it into 3 pieces about 3'' square, "as you might do with
other grasses". I've tried various feedings to no avail.... very little
spreading. I wish the grass had grown as much as the Catalpa. Keith,
you'd really split a seam looking at mine! Douglas
