I can't really recommend for Zone 7 - I'm in 4, but I have to brag on my
steel arch which is now completely covered with a Golden Hops vine (I swear
it grew about 5 inches a day). Its "flowers" are the odd little cones and
this variety grows like mad. In fact, I suspect it may become a thug; I had
to dig up a few runners that snuck off a foot from the main plants at the
base of the arch. But it looks great against the darker green of the woods
behind my yard.
Will clematis get tall enough to do the job for you?
