Linda,
what about a rambler or large climbing rose? Heirloom Old Garden Roses
recommends the following for arches: 'Dorothy Perkins', 'New Dawn', and
'Apple Blossom'. Short climbers (7-10 ft) include 'Sally Holms',
'America', and 'Seafoam'. I have 'America'. I can vouch for its wonderful
fragrance, extreme ease of care (no blackspot -- and I am in the land of
blackspot!), and beautiful dark green foliage that sets off those neon
salmon-pink roses. It seems like it is always in bloom all season.
Clusters have huge roses that sometimes just hang with the weight of the
blooms. Just be careful where you put it; it will command attention. A
little shade will go a long way in keeping the color true. I have Russian
sage planted at its feet. The soft lavender haze is good for complimenting
that color and toning it down a bit.
Heirloom's web site: www.heirloomroses.com. They will ship out roses all
season.
