Re: Weeding, in theory

Janet,
Lord, did you bring back the memories! My New York City,
apartment-dwelling in-laws visited us frequently while they were both still
living. My F-i-L grew two African Violets in his windowsill, thereby
qualifying him for Garden Expert Extraordinaire (IHHO). He was always doing
something like you describe below, though usually I wouldn't discover it
til he left, thereby preserving his life for yet another garden attack at
some later date.

One of the few I found immediately (how could I not)..I had a beautiful old
weeping cherry that was the focal point of the garden in spring. Its
flowered branches were long and lush and touched the ground, so thickly you
couldn't see inside to the trunk. I came home from work on one of their
visits to find that my F-i-L had decided it looked unkempt, so he pruned
all the branches in a straight line, as high as he could reach. Looked like
a 7-yr-old whose Mom used an inverted bowl to give a haircut. It looked
awful; I could almost see the flowers turn even pinker with embarassment.

It (and my F-i-L) survived, of course, though it never looked as good..It's
long gone now (the unfortunate way with weeping cherries) as is he. I'll
have to admit I miss him more than the tree..

Gerry
