Re: Off-topic--Neighbor and privets

I told my therapist that we were planning to replace the hedge. She
said, "Are you CRAZY?"
Just kidding; no therapist in her right mind would use the "C"
word. She did say that replacing the hedge was totally unwarranted and
suggested: "Have your gardener write you a letter documenting
everything: How tall the privets were before, how tall they are now, how
long it will take them to fill in, how long to grow back to the former
height, why some dead stalks are to be expected, *and* how much you are
paying for maintenance on shrubs that aren't yours. Send your neighbor a
copy and explain that the best thing to do is simply wait a few months.
Then let him make the next move."
As for a potential lawsuit that would interfere with the sale of the
house: "He can't just decide to put a lien on your house! He might take
you to Small-Claims Court, but he'd still have to show that he suffered
damages. By the time it gets to court, the privets will be back to
usual.
"Also, if you pull out well-established shrubs, it could just be the
tip of the iceberg. What if it disturbs some underground structure, or
causes his new driveway to buckle? Stay away from that! You might have
to throw him $500, but replacing the hedge? Ignore him."
Do you agree? After all, she is not a lawyer. What kind of
compensation does my neighbor deserve for having to look at our house?
Granted, it used to look worn, but it was painted last week and the
gardeners did a spring cleanup.
