Janet,
Some of our California writers could tell you more about the details, but I
would recommend you contact your Connecticut department of Ag regarding
California restrictions and quarantines. They have VERY STRICT regulations
as to what you can and cannot bring into the state. Drivers are questioned
and vehicles are inspected at the entry points into the state. If you have
anything on their "no=no" list, it will be confiscated. You should be able
to find out what's on the list by beginning your inquiry now. It would be a
shame to dig and cart plants clear across the country only to have them
taken away from you.

We're preparing to relocate from Connecticut to southern California.
Our realtor just asked us which things we plan to leave with the house
(refrigerator, draperies, etc.) I had hoped to take divisions of certain
plants, but am worried about possibly transporting pests or harmful
bacteria that don't exist in California.
Should I even bother? It occurs to me that most plants that can
survive clay soil in zone 6 will not thrive in the desert, but some of
these plants were hard to find and the collector in me wants to give it
a try.
By the way, can you tell me the USDA zone for Orange County,
California? I found a map online but it's too small for me to read. My
husband's office will be in Irvine, less than ten miles from the coast,
so our home will be close to that (he's had it with long commutes). It's
not true desert conditions (e.g., temperatures don't plummet at night)
because of the air pollution.
