Janet:Orange County CA/was Regional pests

Hi Janet - welcome to the Left Coast! Boy are you in for some culture shock!
My mom was raised in Conn. but spent much of her young adult life in
SoCal, where I was raised

As far as what zone Irvine is, you may as well toss the countrywide
scale out the door. Much of the west coast is governed by microclimates
and the bible is Sunset Magazines Western Garden Book. There is a new
issue this year and you really might consider buying it (readily
available on line) ahead of time and check out those collected plants.
I bet you will find them there as just about anything will grow in
SoCal. Just as long as it does not need a deep freeze every winter.

I think you will find Irvine soil and growing conditions to be fairly
friendly to anything you want to bring, but check first with Calif.
State (don't know who off hand) to make sure you can import plants. I
know they are picky picky about fruit trees and fruits in general.
We lived in Fullerton when mom had a very large garden, especially
roses, which she would trim, dip the trimmed canes in root-tone and
stick them in the ground where she wanted another rose bush.

These days, however, I understand that watering is a problem and many
homeowners are considering Xeriscaping for their semi arid landscapes.
Irvine, in fact the whole coastal and close to coastal OC is densely
populated. You might be surprised at commute times as the freeways are
known for their slow traffic during commutes..a totally different type
of commute than the east coast has.

Hopefully some current OC resident will check in on this subject - I
moved away 25 years ago, and except for visits to family and friends
don't go back much..I live in gardening heaven now.
Good luck and have fun on your move and home search!
