Here in east Tennessee, Sweet William, dame's rocket, ox-eyed daisies
are the flowers of choice from the garden to decorate the graves.
Earlier flowers for earlier churches would be iris, peony, and Sweet
William. At a local florist, women were designing baskets with 25 cent
plants to decorate the graves and then bring home to plant. They also
were doing a brisk business with the glads and filler(ferns). My
grandfather always had red peonies and roses to decorate all the graves
of the family but now no one does it. That is what happens when people
move a lot.
