Oh Nancy - I do relate in a big way! My "baby" (of 26) was married last
summer and not only was I the mother of the bride, I was the florist!
"No way" I said"are we going to buy what I can grow!"
Since they planned the wedding in advance, I had lots of time to plant a
garden dedicated to their wedding flowers.
Sadly, nothing bloomed on time ;-(
I had planted 6 Bridal White rose bushes, 15 casablanca lily, 20
stargazer lily as well as delphiniums, blue salvia and so on. The few
roses were not nearly enough, the lilies were tight buds... well..it was awful!
I ended up at a corner florist's 2 days before (after doing the 'bloom
dammed flower' dance during the days leading up to the wedding).
The florist didn't have time to do the wedding but took me to the local
wholesalers where I spent several hundred dollars buying what was
growing in the side yard.
Do you know that they charge $5.oo for a stem of casablanca lily?
I had taken a class at the local community college in wedding body
flowers and arranging and was able to still do the flowers, wonderfully.
the kids went on a 2 week honeymoon and when they got back we had a
large garden party - the garden was gloriously abloom with the wedding flowers!
"Never Again" I swore.
However the daughters lovely wedding flowers has brought me an
occasional Wedding Flower sideline business...I have 4 of them this
summer. One of these days I'll have to get that license and permit to
buy wholesale myself!
