Claire,
I've never grown morning glories up live shrubs, nor have I seen them in
shrubs. (I do grow some over a dead japanese maple - it provides a fine
framework and is about 5 feet high - but I'd much prefer to have a live
japanese maple !)). However, several years ago, a former neighbor grew them
up small trees that had been recently planted in the 'hell-strip'. It was
quite striking - somehow, the vine seemed inconspicuous till it got to the
tree branches... It really looked like a small blue flowering tree... and I
really don't know how she got them up the tree trunk - maybe some of that
light netting wrapped loosely around the trunks.
This year, I have a couple extra morning glory and cardinal climber vines
and I'm going to plant them near a lilac and a red twig dogwood bush and see
how they do...
