Chris, we're on the same wavelength -- I started growing perennials in
containers a few years ago, sometimes with annuals, sometimes not. It's
a lot of fun, and more interesting than the same old, same old.

I often get perennials through the mail before I'm ready to put them in
their "permanent" place in a bed, so I plant them in pots and they often
stay there until Fall, when I plant them in the ground. Now I do it on
purpose! Some things that have done well handled this way include:

Echinacea purpurea - pink and/or white
Coreopsis vert. 'Moonbeam' (good filler or edger for pots)
Liatris (white) -- 'Kobold' would probably do well too
Delphinium (the shorter kinds)
Garlic chives (pretty with blue petunias)
Chrysanthemums (I like the singles)
Feverfew (great filler)
Artemesia (esp. 'Powis Castle')
Astilbe (any but the very tall)- great in a shady patio
Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm'
Shasta daisies
Grasses (Pennisetum, the shorter Miscanthus)
Hostas
Daylilies (shorter kinds, esp. Happy Returns, Little Wine Cup)
All kinds of herbs - basil, parsley, dill, sage, thyme...
Lots of lilies! (I like them with grasses or almost anything)
Sedum 'Autumn Joy' (great accent in the Fall)
Heuchera (dark ones make a good accent)
Shrubby clematis (esp. the later blooming ones)
Siberian Iris (usually don't bloom the first year in a pot but nice
  foliage)

Some of my favorite combos include the red pennisetum (not hardy here)
with artemisa 'Powis Castle' and purple coneflowers with a dark leaved
plant such as coleus or the 'Blackie' sweet potato vine.
Lilies with feverfew
White echinacea with coreopsis 'Moonlight' & 'Blue Mirror' delphiniums
Late lilies with white liatris and vines
Shorter Dill with purple Basil & red or fuchsia geraniums

Big pots are great for creating and highlighting those perfect plant
combos we're all so keen on! And the smaller ones keep them company.
