Dear Ann: I have grown Clematis recta for about 25 years, and think you
will enjoy it. It IS floppy, and, for me, always needs support. I
should imagine that it MIGHT stand up all by itself if grown in FULL sun,
but I have tried it in various places where it gets maximum sun, without
success (uprightwise). I just don't have any place where there is much
more than a half day of sun.
But is is a handsome plant, when supported, and it is otherwise
well-behaved. It neither self-sows, nor ramps. The clumps do increase
in size, but fairly slowly. I have never tried it as
a cut flower, but now that I've wondered about such a use, will cut some
when it starts blooming, as it is getting ready to do in zone 7a.
I increase it by division in fall or early spring. Because it isn't
widely distributed (at least not in this area), it makes a nice gift.
