: .This would be the correct term for what we used to call meadow mice ( as
opposed to house mice) when I was young many centuries ago.  They have
small ears and are much thicker through the neck and shoulders ( more like
a hamster). If you live in the country they are what your cat usually drags
in and leaves have eaten on the carpet right where you'll step on them. 
Not related to moles which are burrowing insectivores.
