Ants are pests when they try to set up homes in the wrong spots but they are
also useful creatures. They aerate the soil and collect and dispose of
small organic trash by moving it into their mounds (organic matter in the
soil as well as a form of flea control!) Even Texas, with a serious fireant
problem, seeks to control those critters rather than eradicate them.
My control methods are to keep endangered plants well watered since outdoor
ants don't really like living in wet conditions and to dig out or flood out
ant hills located in what I consider to be unfortunate neighborhoods.
