We should always take a look at all available information rather
than accepting what we are told. For instance, people who
automatically assume that chemically treated wood shouldn't be
used in the garden. And Organic Gardening said so. Mebbe.
Take a look at the studies themselves.
Also true of invasives. But be careful of making assumptions.
Reasearchers have found (and others have repeatedly replicated)
that loosestrife seed can travel many, many miles. Futher, the
supposedly sterile cultivars aren't. For a real good look at
the problem, draw a 50 mile radius around your house and drive
the roads. Look at what you see. If there are escapees or
*any* one plant dominates an area ... for that matter *any*
cultivated plant can be seen in the wild, odds are good that it
is invasive and simply shouldn't be grown in the garden in that
area.
Buddleias have become invasive in many parts of the PNW. So ..
buddleias, nice as they are, simply shouldn't be grown.
When individuals make the effort to discover potential problems
of growing any plant that is not native or a close relative and
make the reponsible choice not to grow them, perhaps we wouldn't
need any agency to interceed.
I have talked at length with numerous gardeners in this area who
are growing loosestrife. This whole area is filled with
wetlands of all sorts. I get arguments that generally run along
the lines of, "Tough. I like it and I can buy it, so I will
grow it." Well. 'nuff said.
Individuals taking responsibility for their actions *and* fully
understanding the consequences of their actions is the real
solution. You find me a town full of them & I'll move there.
