Re: Stachys lanata/Lambs Ear

I hardly qualify for this list -- here's how: I can spell "gardener" --
unless one of your disagrees with the form I've selected. Persian? No
problem .

I've been lurking and absorbing, just chock full of ignorance, but want to
get my 2 whatevers in on lambs' ear:

When I bought a house three summers ago, I decided to go for it and spent a
lot of money on 5-gal perennials. This year, I'm so glad that I did that
-- I DON'T CARE if it means no Paris this year. That, I can live without.
This -- perhaps one day regrettably , er ... I'm not so sure I can.

I found lambs' ear to be the reward for the beginner. It stayed where I put
it years one and two; nearly an animal to pet in year one, vibrant and
healthy through winter snows; last year, it bloomed EVERYWHERE and its
sheer happiness (hey! one man's aggressive is another's dance of joy) had
to be contained. This year ... well, hello there! It's EVERYWHERE again,
having taken over the "cool" garden -- talk about ... assertive! But I
love it -- I've given bunches to neighbors who claim to treasure it ... and
look forward to many such divides-and-conquers over the years.

Here's a question, though: now what? How do I move? I'm pretty much
planning to die here now, and I'm 45. Can one move three gardens wholesale?
What does the purchase agreement say? Anyone have any experience?

Anyway ... thanks for your sound advice over the past few months. The only
thing that makes me wonder about our focus is: more caring about El Nino's
impact on perennials (I'm guilty!) than thinking about the mudslides and
horrifying ends it brought to PEOPLE in other areas? It's wrong -- as long
as everyone is in synch with that knowledge. I'm thinking that everyone
knows how silly some of this sounds vis-a-vis human tragedies up and down
both coasts -- and we deliberately choose -- because that's all we can do
from here? Hell.

Thank you to the person who read through this lengthy screed to get to this
sad little trailing-off point. It's been a long day.

: Its a wonderful perennial in the right place(in my opinion). To me it
looks
: best and is reliable given a hot dry well drained spot of low to medium
: fertility in full sun. Given such a spot it remains compact and the
foliage
: will be almost a brilliant silver white - assuming this is the Stachys
: bysantina (=lanata) thats familiar to me.
