The early Spring appears to have transformed itself into early summer in Ottawa.
The delicious perfume of lilacs still fills the air although it won't for much longer. The tulips are all over expect for the graceful long
lasting white heads of 'Spring Green'. Spires of allium and iris blossom together while blooming forget-me-nots, candytuft, various moss phlox
and ajuga reptens decorate their toes. A lovely soft-colour scene - I'm very pleased with the combination. The green seed heads of some
surprisingly tall grape hyacinth (variety unknown) I put in last autumn are another unexpected ornament. The smaller variety look kind of messy
but these look lovely.
Lupins are just lighting up. Centaura Montana are in flower. Oriental poppies are about to 'pop'. Unfortunately, the only mature poppies I have
are a garish red-orange but the crepe flowers are spectacular. A more appropriate salmon-coloured variety should be ready to bloom next year. It
appears I've done a fairly good job of interplanting perennials with bulbs. Most of the bulb foliage will be well hidden when it starts to turn
brown in the next couple of weeks.
In the shade, forget me nots, ajuga reptens and vinca minor are the 'footlights' for hardy geraniums, white and pink bleeding hearts, and an early
white flowered monkshood. Unfortunately several varieties of small bulbs put up foliage but few flowers this Spring. Oh well, you can't win them
all! My two 'Northern Lights' azaleas are putting on a lovely show in the shrub border nearby. My garden is only 2 years old, but already
showing signs of how it will mature. Oh the anticipation!
