asters; potentilla

Thanks to the weird winter, my New England asters--and some mums--are
beginning to bloom. (It is May, isn't it??)

When they are finished blooming, should I cut them back? I recall
hearing a local horticulturist suggesting that when mums do that, they
should be cut back hard after bloom and they should bloom again at the
usual time. D'ya suppose I should treat the asters the same way?

Also, while we're on the subject of cutting back...should the stems of
potentilla be cut back after they bloom? I have some I grew from seed
and they didn't bloom much last year (their first). I haven't grown
them before, so I'm not really certain what to expect from them.

Thanks all!
