Dear Myrna:
Good question!
I have a corkscrew willow tree because my Aunt Cleo liked it and gave me
a start. My son Paul asked for one because he was fond of her also.
I think of my Grandmother when I look at my bleeding hearts. But her
favorite flower was a climbing yellow rose, which I do not have.
My mother grows lots of Forget-me-Nots (mysotis) and when I look at my
patch I think of her. Scads come up for her every year and she passes
them on to everyone in the family.
Not all associations are welcome. For years I hated gladiolus and didn't
know why. Then one day I was in front of a stand of salmon-colored glads
and it came over me like a wave. When I was a child, they returned my
uncle's body after World War II. The children were kept in the country
church while the burial ceremony was held across the road in the
ceremony. The church pulpit was adorned with huge bouquets of salmon
glads, probably bounty from a neighbors garden. I remembered hearing
the gun salute. And how my mother grieved for her favorite brother.
Have you read a copy of the book, 'Passalong Plants' by Felder Rushing?
And if you are ever near to where he is giving a lecture, don't fail to
go. The hour will seem like 10 minutes!
