Re: Corkscrew Willow

I met my first Corkscrew Willows last Jan.
We bought our house last year and have developed a love- hate
relationship with the 2 corkscrew willows. We love trees, and they are
the only mature ones on our lot. Also they are on the west side of the
house and provide great shade and are quite beautiful.
I hate the frequent raking, sweeping and gutter clean outs caused by the
leaves and twigs.
They are about 20 years old now (says our tree guy).
We had to get them treated last year for cottonwood borers.
Very disgusting BIG bugs who evidently live a total of 5 years and go
through larve, catapillar, moth then bug stages. The bugs are as tough as
a tank and as hard to kill.
With pincers so strong they can snap twigs and pinch fingers and toes.
You can't miss 'em if you get 'em, they are 1 to 1 1/2 inches long, white
with big black dots and long antennae.
Everyone said our trees were doomed except this one arborist. Of course
the fact that they all specialize in stump grinding and replants could
explain that.
We wanted to save them if at all possible as the cost. To remove and
replant, the higher heating/cooling cost, the years we would have to
wait until maturity, and moving my shade garden evened up the cost to us.
Anyway, he put some chemicals in little cup things serpntine around them,
advised use to get them trimmed up, then sprayed them w/ something a
month later, came back in Nov., Feb. & today and fertilized them.
They look great!
We are having to water like crazy due to 20 days w/ no rain.
We water them for about 3 hrs. (moving the hose every 15 min.) 1x per
week.
He said to go to 2 days a week this summer.
But hey, at least they don't get bagworms!
