Hello Keith,
We have been through the attack from primeval Horsetail Hell. I purchased
a one gallon container of that stuff and placed among my Japanese Iris in a
moist area. Looked great for about 3 years. Then it took over the lover
area. Next it came up behind a six foot high rock retaining wall and into
the main garden. It took two years to get into the complete front section
of my garden. The loose organic soil was heaven to the stuff. The area I am
describing is from 15 to 25 feet wide and about 65 feet long!
We aggravated every extension office around, read every paper we could
find, went on the various lists for advice. We finally found one method to
kill this stuff and not take out the existing plants it has invaded.
Cut each stalk of horsetail just below a joint. That will leave a tube
above the joint below. Take an eyedropper and place a few drops into each
stalk of Enforcer Brush Killer. They die almost instantly. Be Careful with
this stuff!!!! Don't cut the next stalk until you have filled the one just
cut. That way you will not miss one to take over after you kill ... most...
of them. You must get all.
Digging or disturbing them only encourages them into further growth. They
can and do travel by spore and underground runners. Runners that can travel
20 to 30 feet.
From Gene who is now almost horsetail free in the garden. We missed a few
in the Peonies last year.
