Second year garden

Hi everyone,
Last summer everyone on this list suggested I keep a
journal so I would know which plants I was happy with,
which should be moved etc. etc. Someone else on the
list said that her garden was so different the second
year because plants which had been only a few inches
tall the first year had grown by leaps and bounds the
second year. Taking all this advice to heart I kept
my journal and my patience..waiting for the second
year. It has now arrived.
This morning I went out to gaze upon my garden and saw
what I thought was a tulip which had broken off at the
top and was dangling upside down from the stem. When
I went to cut it off, I discovered it was my
Columbine!!. Last year the flowers on my Columbine
were sort of wimpy little things..in fact the whole
plant was kind of wimpy looking. The flowers this
year look like something out of the Amazon rain
forest. They are huge...every bit as big as my
tulips. I don't know what kind they are but they
don't have spurs.
My Stokesia are about 8 inches tall now and really
healthy looking. No flowers yet of course, but here
in zone 5 they look great. I think the choreopsis
grandiflora bloomed themselves nearly to death last
summer. One is completely dead and the other two
would not win any prizes for health. My oriental
poppies have doubled in size and I'm anxiously
awaiting buds to form. I recall, after reading my
journal, how ecstatic I was last summer when the first
poppy bud bloomed. I also remember how I sunk into
despair when I discovered it gone the next morning and
got the shock that the blooms only last for 1 day.
Since I only had three buds, my days of ecstasy were
short-lived.
You will all be happy to know that my shasta daisies
are looking very healthy. Actually everything is
looking pretty good. Did I mention that my painted
daisy didn't survive the winter nor did the Foxglove.
As far as the botanical names are concerned, I'm like
Craig (I think it was). Having been forced to take
four years of Latin in High school, and having spent
years learning that "All Gaul is divided into three
parts", I vowed I would never touch Latin again.

PS. I have been using Peter's 20-20-20 fertilizer
this spring..applying it every 3-4 weeks. Maybe that
accounts for my monster Columbines!
