ON PURPOSE? >> Hi, Susan --
I've tried to grow Rudbeckia from commercial seed pkts 2-3 times with
no success. Apparently what they put on the back of the pkts Is more or less
"generic" to planting all seed in general. I have discovered this last year
that there is more to starting seed, esp. perennials. This year I found a
couple seed starting databases on the Net.

And then there is the Propagation List's Archives:

When wanting info, I start with the first one and work my way down.
I don't remember when I've last used the last 3.
I was successful this year, I believe, because of info I found on the McAlpin
site.
I have nearly approx. 64 seedlings to show for my "homework" so am very happy!
According to the McAlpin site Rudbeckia should germinate in 14-21 days at
65-70 deg. F. in peaty soil. SURFACE sow and light is required.
You probably did all that. BUT I think the clincher was the
Pre-chilling for 2 weeks! That bit of info is never included on any pkgs. I
simply put the seed pkt in a zip-lock in the crisper of my Frig. That was
the only thing different I did this year.
Now that is my HO. I am always eager to hear what the experts/expereinced
"growers" have to say. I frequently don't respond because I don't feed
qualified.
Best Wishes to you all --
