The type of sand you use is very important.  Never use beach sand or
playbox sand.  It is too round, fine and even in texture and will give you
the cement type of result.  Builders sand is better, but can be quite
variable in size.  Here in SE Wisconsin, where we have clay soil, I have
had best luck using what is called torpedo sand or sharp sand.  It would
probably be to your advantage to use some other amendments in addition to
the sand - peat, compost, something more organic.
