Around July, when they will have set seed if not deadheaded, they get very
ratty looking. I let seeds mature because I want them, so cut them back to
the ground at this time - just before their new flush of growth in July.

I think this is what I did last year- I let them set seed and then cut off
the ratty looking stuff and they did not rebloom for me. But I think I see
why from your post Marge I did not get rebloom. I let all of the energy go in
to making the seeds and you are saying to not let that happen to get a second
bloom. Thanks for clearing that up.
BTW I got a beautiful dark purpe columbine at a ladys huose that was selling
a few plants. It kind of looks like it has a double flower also. Until this
addition in the garden I only had the common yellow/orange kind. Didn't
realize ther were so many colors. Also on one of the garden magazines they
had a beautiful one on the fromt cover. It was a cream center with a
periwinkle color on the outside.
