I was glad to see Paul's post about the various kinds of catmint,
since it reminded me that the 'Walker's Low' that I put in last
year is now about 30 inches tall! It was very nice last summer
and kept to about 10-12 inches, but it's enormous now -- and almost
three feet wide. Is it possible that Walker's Low somehow reverts
to a different type? Or perhaps I got the wrong plant? Paul, have
you grown yours for a number of years?
Re the cats -- mine wait politely until I pinch off some branches
for them, then they roll around on their treats but never on the
plants. To keep neighborhood cats away, I use a few of those half-
sphere metal baskets that are sold usually in groups of three, hanging
from a chain to keep potatoes etc. in, in a kitchen. Saw four of these
(old ones) at a garage sale and grabbed them. They're about 12-14
inches across, the dome is screen-like, good also for protecting small
seedlings. I cover the catmint early in the season; once it's gotten
full, I take the domes off and put small sticks all through the clumps.
No rolling last year or this!
The self-seeder I'm dealing with this year is perilla -- I love the
dark red leaves but the seedlings have gotten out of hand.
