Re: Siberians & tall beardeds

Marilyn and all
on the subject of Siberian Iris. I have a large clump of a tall siberian iris, I haven't a clue what the name is. It was given to me by a lady that has a Lilly Farm. Every time I visit she always gives me something before I leave. On a visit about 10 years ago she gave me a very large clump. that was my first experience with this plant. The color is a blue-purple and it is about 18 to 24".. tall and a very beautiful plant. over the years I have divided and shared with others and planted some in other locations.
I have ordered siberian iris from Dutch Gardens and have been disappointed in a way, I have been able to get some other colors, yellow, white and a shade of blue, but they just don't measure up to the ones that the Lilly Lady gave me.
You can't beat the old timers. I'll take them any day over the new.

Another good Siberian Iris is Butter and Sugar, a nice sunny yellow
w/white. It occasionally reblooms for me also. I have been looking for a
good blue, so will search for Orville Fay. I love the Siberians when they
are in bloom, but agree it is oh too short.

Marilyn,

If you can get the information try to find a high bud count and at least one branch on the bloomstalk. Many of them go straight up with two buds which is one year's housing for three or four days flowering. That is another good reason to find one with very strong healthy foliage. The McEwen Siberians are bred in Maine so do well in my garden. Old 'Orville Fay' has been around for years and since it has become "superceded' by newer hybrids it may take a bit of looking. When a genus becomes a plant society and new hybrids are churned out every year, really good plants are lost in the shuffle. The phrase "superceded by" should be looked at with a careful eye.
