I laughed out loud at that statement. My observation has been that if planted in a place they like, they THRIVE! If the location is iffy, they languish. I had a few amongst the tall bearded Iris and the slugs ate them to skeletons. I also had some under a Concord Grape Vine, in full sun, and they never got impressive. The four I mentioned that did the best were planted behind the compost bin in part shade on the North side of the house (they apparently liked the run-off from the compost). I have never had anything grow well for me in that spot!Have to admit they do make a nice display ... in other people's gardens.
