poppies as a field crop

>>Off topic a bit, I will add here for Don M. the question on a specific
strain
of poppy for drug production. In the Rix/Phillips newest on annuals they
state that the P. somniferum grown for opium production is a strain with
pods
4 inches in length. I have never seen that plant. Their description is 10
cm. which would be about 4 inches.

I was in Tasmania a few years ago and saw a LOT of fields with signs that
said, "Keep out, toxic," something to that effect. Finally stopped to take
a closer look. Opium poppies, by the acre. I assumed it's where the
pharmaceuticals get their raw material. Didn't notice the seed pods because
I was so amazed at the idea of poppies as a publicly-grown field crop.
