Yes Walter, one of the subscribers they lost was me.  I wrote to them 
pointing out the distant subscribers had no benefit from full active 
membership and they replied that it was a financial decision.  Can't argue 
with the bottom line today. I also agree with your comment on "Horticulture". 
 I no longer subscribe to this one though it is part of a benefit with 
membership in Mass. Hort. Soc. if you select the higher category.  This makes 
the subscription to "Horticulture" way higher priced than subscribing 
separately or buying it on a newstand. Yes, all of these groups, dependent to 
some degree on many volunteers, are at risk to survive.

I don't know what the answer might be.  We have so many zones and climate 
differences in this country, one society cannot satisfy all gardeners. 
Regional groups don't seem to be having an easy time of it.  Maybe if we 
study plants in Iraq we could get some money from Washington <VBG>
