Hello Kemberly & Donna,
There must be a place for Home Depot and Wal Mart among others. They are
certainly doing well enough. Be it good or bad, I an relate a local reaction
to the big new Wal Mart Super store near here. One of the local growers of
annuals and bedding plants is dropping those from his nursery. He used to be
the Mecca for annuals in this area. But, he cannot not compete with the big
store give-aways, so he made the decision to quit loosing money on plants no
one would come and purchase any longer. There was no comparison on quality
of plants, but there was on pricing. But, the locals made the decision to go
with price over quality.
I have not seen a Lowe's, but I am told they are doing a much better job
with low cost perennials and shrubs. Attempting to attract the landscapers.
The big box stores are a bit like TV watching.. everyone only watches
the educational channels when asked. But most of those junk shows do quite
well in ratings. We have stopped by Wal Marts. I do not purchase plants, but
I do look for bargains on pots and garden accessoriries, mulch etc.
Survival and 'thrival' requires the ability to read the handwriting on
the wall. You change and grow or you die on the vine.
