It might also be news to know that HD is moving into garden centers. The
three test stores are in the Atlanta area. I don't know what this means to
any of us but their press release in a nursery owner magazine stated that
they will be staffing with horticulturists. Maybe they will swell up
sufficiently and topple over one day. From my family's retired point of view
they have made a tremendous difference in the way local construction
companies do business. No delivery, no credit, no road salesmen. Lower
prices (not always) for the local contractor and passing on the services to
that contractor so he ends up giving you higher prices. Thinking this
through you will see the lower HD (and similar companies) costs make higher
cost to you in the end, or significantly more time cost and labor cost.
They have destroyed all but two local suppliers (building materials) in my
area which is just shy of 1,000,000 population in three connected counties.
I expect the garden centers are going to be kept in a turmoil also. The
local business person still has a place if he can get his message around. We
still have many local perennial growers though they move into seasonal stuff
as the year goes by, pumpkins, Christmas trees, etc. HD does not do water
gardens, stone work, design, and persists in bad advice so there is still a
place for local business. Also, publications spread the word on better and
newer plants, especially shrubs that do well in your area which HD never
stocks, another place to be if local.
