That makes sense about the infestation of fly larva especially since each little "berry" is uneven.  I am thankful I am not familiar with that insect...yet.

The "fruits" are the cause of rose-gall fly. If you cut one "fruit" in pieces you should see an orange, yellow or white larva in it.
