Don't know if the appetites of deer in California are the same as zone 4-5
in Maine, but our deer while they love regular roses, won't go near Rugosa
Roses. Rugosa's seem to survive drought, fog, saltwater and poor soil while
most varieties have very fragrant blooms - and you can find varieties that
grow from zones 3 through 10. Might be a good choice for your particular
location.
