Alpine-L, the Electronic Rock Garden Society

Louise Parsons and I, the listowners of Alpine-L, the Electronic Rock
Garden Society mailinglist, were slightly dismayed on November 19 to see
Duncan McAlpine's posting here on "Perennials" (reproduced below) in which
he stateded that Alpine-L "is a little beyond the normal rock
gardener like myself [i. e. like Duncan]".

I had tried, as you can see below, to help John Adney with the new rock
garden for which he sought help on November 16th on the Perennials list.
The president of the North American Rock Garden Society sent the Adneys
information at my request; Adney later wrote of a strong response to his
needs by the rock gardening community.

Because I thought it might be useful, I suggested in my letter (below) to
John Adney that he would be welcome on Alpine-L. Duncan McAlpine took it
upon himself to follow that by making disparaging remarks about our
list. We have well over 500 members, all of whom seem to me to be just
as "normal", if not more so, as Duncan McAlpine.

In his efforts to publicize his own list, Duncan has had quite the
opposite about Alpine-L to say in a post (immediately below) that he sent
yesterday to Alpine-L. I am happy to report that Duncan's opinion of
Alpine-L, as expressed yesterday, is an improvement over his
characterization of November 16th.

Subject: Propagation information

If you are looking for some quick tips on propagation, you can try my
mailing list search engine to see if the Family has been discussed.
http://www.mallorn.com/lists/seeds-list/search.cgi

Just type in the name and see what happens. If if comes up zero then
try another name.

The archives does not focus on Alpines but all plants. The topics of
propagation will vary but I would like to educate the ALpine-l members
of this url to support your intrest.

Non realated alpine propagation question can be address on the
seeds-mailing list. Alpine-l provides a great sourse of information on
alpines and seeds-list may provide the information you need on
propagating plants. Take a look and give it a try.

Yes, Duncan, we are happy to give you the publicity you seek for your
list; your postings *will* appear on Alpine-L, both of them (the one
above, and the one below).

Alpine-L accepts postings about ANY plant in which ANY gardener
might be interested in planting in any part of the garden, whether in the
rock garden or nearby. There is no plant that we deem unsuitable for
Alpine-L postings. We DO reject spam, but nothing else. --HD
