Using PVC pipe has many benefits for us:
-We use it in our business and always have leftover pieces for us and
can even share them with neighbors.
-We have clay soil. Even though the effect is small, pushing them into
the ground does break up the soil.
-November 15th is American Recycle Day. This certainly counts towards
that effort.
-We have lots of rain. These things cannot be destroyed.
-Safety. They are large enough not to trip over, but small enough to be
discreet.
-On dry Summer days, this is a very old-fashioned way to deep root water
plants - by watering with the hose into the end of the pipe. Water goes
directly to the roots.
-I wonder if slugs would like it, crawl into it and dine on slug killer?
-Caps are easy to find if plant nearby is sensitive to overwatering.
You can find caps where you find the PVC pipe.
-In certain locations, they could be used as stakes as well as markers.
-An interesting way to get kids introduced to gardening. They can
plant, label and even decorate the pipe.
-Our dog will not remove the markers we have been using (quite a variety
over the years), thinking they are a toy.
-And on and on
Thanks for the great idea. As usual, sometimes the obvious solution is
right in front of our noses!
