At my mother's house in St. Croix, the dish water and the washing
machine water going straight out of the house in a big PVC pipe to a
big patch of bannanas, with little ditches to run the water around.
They don't mind the soap at all, but use bleach very sparingly. (If
you don't mind the the occasional heap of bubbles on the ground).
This probably would not be feasible in the States, because the cold
air would flow into the house up thru the pipe. I guess there could be
some sort of flap. After 15 years of this system, my father's fear
that a rat would run up the pipe and die has not come to pass!
