Margaret,
You're right, soil is a better winter mulch, but I find that it's more difficult
to remove in spring than leaves and I hate to admit this, I'm a bit lazy.
The best solution is ... that I am not replacing HT roses with HT, but am
investigating hardier varieties. I planted a Floribunda 'Betty Prior' this year,
so we'll see how she does. I've had a David Austen, 'Bianca' for three years,
but it gets weaker and weaker each year...I may not see it next spring. An even
better solution, move to real rose country!
