You should be OK growing the C. hederifolium outside. I have had it here for
some years. In bloom now and has been for the past month. The C. coum blooms (for
me) do not survive the weather swings from cold to warm and back to cold around
here very well. Plant itself is hardy, just the blooms get destroyed. Think that
one does best with protection of a cold frame or similar. Perhaps someone else has
different experiences....?
No reason not to grow them in pots if you prefer that. Alpiners do it all the
time. Just change the medium every second year or so and keep fed. These little
pips that we are used to seeing eventually do get to be quite good size with age.
Can you imagine one the size of a china saucer in diameter?
