Companion planting for tulips
Now that the first seed catalogue for 2000 (T&M) came in the mail, I am
starting to think of how to overplant my new tulip bed. I would like to
minimize the eyesore which will inevitably follow the great display I am
hoping for. Inspired by the visit to Keukenhof, I planted 140 tulips and
edged them with the grape hyacinths (Muscari) in the one half of the island
bed located in the middle of the lawn. In the other half are some ornamental
shrubs and the garden bench. The tulip bed is in the space left empty by
the untimely demise of Stewartia - but that's another story. The bed is
watered by the sprinkler system, the soil is sandy and acidic. Tulips in
this area usually last 2-3 years so I would like rather not dig them out
after bloom. In your collective experience are there plants ( I am afraid to
use the "a" word) which would hide the decaying tulip foliage, look OK
through the summer and have shallow enough roots not to interfere with the
bulbs?. It does not have to be anything spectacular because later in the
season the focus shifts to the perennial border which is close by. Thanks
for all the advice, this list is great! Sophie (zone 5/6- Eastern
