Re: Companion planting for tulips


Last fall I over-planted a small tulip patch with bearded iris. It worked
well.

Just as the tulip flowers were fading, the iris started to bloom. Through
out the summer, the iris leaves hid the tulip foliage while it died off.

My theory was that about the same time that I would want to replace the
tulips (2 or 3 years), I would also want to divide the iris.  Since both
are best planted/divided in the fall, I'll be able to renew the bed in step.

I think the tulips were Rhapsody (They were an "early order freebie" and
I've lost the package.) I don't know what variety the iris is. I got them
from my cousin about 5 years ago and she had forgotton what they were.
