Chicago botanic

Claire, although the Lincoln Park Conservatory is worth a visit (I haven't
been to the Garfield park place in many years since I don't live in Chicago
anymore), but if your time is limited, the place to go is the Chicago
Botanic Garden in Glencoe. We were up there for a day in the middle of
August (usually not the peak time for any garden, but it's our wedding
anniversary week) and it was really wonderful. They have done an excellent
job in terms of "hardscape" as well as a very wide range of plants, well
labeled and taken care of very well, and wonderful garden design. The use of
water in the garden is especially interesting there, and the range of
individual "gardens within a garden" is inspiring.
