For a follow-up if any listers are going this way:

The excellent Chicago Trolley tour takes you nearly everywhere with a shuttle
driver who will take you to the Lincoln Conservatory. From another stop,
Chicago Hilton, there is a free shuttle to the Garfield Conservatory. It is
operated by the Chicago Parks Dept. The Garfield is in a "iffy" area for a
tourist on his own. To sum up Garfield is larger and more interesting, both
are easy to access on the same day. Both have outdoor annual and perennial
beds.

Chicago Botanic is a daytrip from the city on a more than twenty mile train
trip north of Chicago. I did not have time to do this but I certainly will
the next trip.

Thanks for all messages to me.
