Well, Dee Ann, you're a whole lot more tidy minded than I am:-) The
only clean up I do in fall is (hopefully) getting the massive amounts
of leaves that fall on my wooded garden off the drive, paths and
patio and those that threaten to smother evergreen perennials off of
them. All the rest stays as it is until spring when I do my clean
up. I learned early on that it is a total waste of effort to try to
tidy borders under oak trees who like to retain about 25% or so of
their leaves until bud break in spring...if I do it in autumn, I get
to do it all over again in spring.
I do, of course, lift my Canna and other tender stuff I want to save,
either before killing frost or after it blackens their
leaves...depending on plant. I also cut and trash peony foliage to
ward off Botrytis.
I don't discuss the state of my house until gardening season is
over:-) Winter is for house cleaning...
