Re: Overwintering annuals

I have not had the "annual" Lobelia seed for me, but this is another
that I have kept for more than a year. Last fall, a pot of it was
looking so good that I brought it into the greenhouse, where it
bloomed all winter and continued to put on new growth...these are
plants who prefer it cool. This was one of a spring 6-pack. The
others didn't make it through the heat of summer. It is just now
starting to look a tad ratty - still new growth at the tips and
flowers, but longer and longer sections of leafless stem. I have not
researched this one, but would not be surprised if it were also a
tender perennial.

After all, the definition of a true annual, as you noted, Claire, is
a plant that grows, sets seed and dies in one season.

I've also had "annual" snapdragons come back for me in the garden;
not seed, but the plant. Not often, to be sure, but a few times when
winters were mild. I don't grow them now for lack of sun, but once
upon a time.
