RE: perennials DIGEST V3 #182

Hello Walter and all: Sorry for the delay in the reply to your email but I
have been to a new pottery class today. It was my first try at pottery and
I loved it!
You asked who ran the show, well I guess if I had to say "one person" I'd
have to say Nancy Robinson, whom you know, was in charge of our show. Nancy
and I are in the same garden club and we are close friends. Oh the
knowledge that woman has! As I said, there were four clubs that
participated in the show. Our clubs are all local and we belong to the
Tennessee Federation of Garden Club. To keep our standing of Excellence, we
have to have a flower show every other year.
I have searched for my program to see what our categories were so I could
better tell you for my brain does not remember to good but could not find it
so I'll do my best.
We had the usual perennials and annuals of which we probably had around 50
entries. One of our new categories this year was the trough garden. One
had mini conifers, one had succulents and one had grasses, all appropriately
sized for the troughs.
There was a category for berried bushes and trees. My Washington Hawthorn
had beautiful berries but the leaves had been chewed by some insect to the
point I would not take a cutting to enter. We had a category for violets,
wreaths ( one wreath was a living wreath with various succulents growing in
a moss filled wire frame (beautiful), and lots of other plants of "one of a
kind". We also had floral arrangements with themes and I'm glad I was not a
judge because it would have been hard to judge which got the blues.
The Best of Show was a 11/2-foot stalk of Hollyhock Mallow Zebrina, (found
in Parks Seed Catalog page 61). Absolutely beautiful and the lady who grew
this had a big sack of the seeds for everyone who was interested in taking
them home. How nice of her.
It was a nice show and we all had fun doing it but Nancy R did such a good
job and she did such hard work making it happen.
I know she's on this listing so "Nancy, forgive me if I embarrassed you with
my compliments but everyone there who was part of the show would agree with
me".
I hope from my description you could sort of tell what all we had.
Nancy "M" from Maryville, TN at the foot of the Chilhowie Mountains where we
have a cloudy day now with 68 degrees.

Nancy:
keep on rattling ! Who ran the flower show? And what were the categories?
Isn't it wonderful to have a show at this time of the gardening year?
