Re: the leaves

Well, what leaves are left on my trees after Isabel are starting to
turn, but I do not see a brilliant fall ahead this year - so many
leaves are damaged, brown, crispy edges and full of black spots
around all the holes that have been punched through them.

My best dogwood (C. florida) is practically denuded of leaves just
when they should start to turn color; they are gone except for some
shreds. The dogwoods in the woods fared better; just shredded some
leaves and broke branches but they still have some leaves.

We had a wet year, too, so they should have been just grand, but what
with hail and hurricanes just do not think this will be a memorable
fall for color around the old casa.

I am noticing more oak branch tip pruning by the squirrels this year
than usual - so many branches with immature acorns were downed during
Isabel that I think they are a bit desperate. They can't get out to
the tips to get the nuts so they just cut off the branch; nice neat
cut - looks like somebody did it with secateurs - then eat the nuts
on the ground and leave the mess. Wads of them all over the place.
Just picked up wads of branch tips with leaves after the storm and am
getting to do it all over again after the squirrels.
