Any good rose care book (Taylor Guides for example) have illustrations.
Quoting Taylor (P.39):
Protect a tree rose by first digging up half the roots; this will enable
you to lie the plant down on its side. Now cover the plant with a large
mound of soil, ...
A picture would be so helpful. The idea is to dig up 1/2 of the roots,
thereby permitting you to bend the entire plant to a horizontal position on
the ground. The remaining roots will support the plants needs over the
winter. In the spring, right the plant and away you go.
By covering the plant, you protect the graft union and the roots that have
been disturbed.
