Peonies in containers?

Despite having expanded my perennial garden this autumn to include a new 20x6
foot bed, I've already run out of space. Yet, I'm still incapable of passing
up free plants.  Last night I rescued a fairly large peony from a friend who
was going to throw it out.  There is just no room in my existing "sun" gardens
for this new arrival.  So....

Has anyone tried to grow peonies in containers?  I know they dislike having
their roots disturbed, and container planting would likely mean having to
divide them in a few years.  I live in Ottawa, Canada (Zone 4/5) where we get
pretty cold temperatures (-25 C) and plenty of snow in winter.
